My research interests could be broadly described as improving the productivity of poultry while improving bird health and welfare. This encompasses systems that range from scavenging village systems to the most intensive systems for egg and meat production and ranges from improving reproductive fitness through to performance of the laying hen or meat bird. I am interested in how the system can be adapted to better fit the needs of the bird and/or phenotypes that are more appropriate for a system be developed. The core research topics that I examine within a framework of poultry production systems, include host (eg genotype, host nutrition) and bacterial pathogen interactions as well as avian physiology and reproduction.

My vision of success for collaborative research is where all parties - end-users, natural and social scientists and stakeholders - feel that they have had optimal input to a project that delivers a tangible and desired improvement for the end-user.
