My name is Stephanie Smith and I am postdoc in the SRUC Integrative Animal Science team. Over the last few years I have been working on the genetics behind the fatty acid profile of cow’s milk, as determined using mid-infrared spectroscopy. My research has also looked at the energy profiles of Holstein cows across lactation (whether they gain or lose too much weight), the amount of methane they produce (an important contributor to greenhouse gases) and aspects of their immune and blood metabolite profiles. My background is in population genetics, molecular ecology and evolutionary biology. I am particularly interested in the application of genetic approaches to tackle issues in conservation biology and sustainable living. I also try and participate in science communication events when I can as I think it is very important to communicate research to the public and wider audiences and share the exciting aspects of science.

‘My vision of success for collaborative research is good communication, dedication and hard work’
